A category Five Cyclone has caused widespread devastation throughout Vanuatu. Gale-force winds of up to 250 km/h have wreaks havoc across the nation and flattened whole communities. Thousands of families have lost their homes and food and water are urgent priorities.
The situation in Port Vila has been describe as utter devastation with UNICEF reporting that up to 90% of buildings have been affected. Many fear that the outer islands, that are yet to be assessed, could have been affected must worse. Initial reports from our local church contacts are of widespread damage to buildings and vegetable gardens leaving people without shelter or adequate food.
ACC International Relief has launched a Humanitarian Relief Appeal to provide immediate assistance and recovery assistance to affected communities. This will include the provision of shelter materials, water, and cooking kits, which will be distributed through local church networks in partnership with Samaritans Purse. ACCI will also work through our Field Workers and the National church to assist families and communities with rebuilding and recovery efforts.
Further assessments and planning will occur over the coming days and weeks.
