Conflicts in recent years across countries in the Middle East have led to widespread human suffering, destruction of infrastructure and the loss of thousands of civilian lives. According to the UN, in Iraq and Syria alone over 9 million people have been internally displaced and over 23 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance.
In response to this, ACCI Relief is partnering with Preemptive Love Coalition to provide humanitarian assistance to those affected in Iraq and Syria. This assistance is targeted at those who have been internally displaced, as well as those trying to remain or rebuild their homes within their own communities. Our response encompasses the following key areas.
These efforts provide emergency supplies such as food, water, hygiene kits and sleeping bags and mats to people fleeing violence and in urgent need of assistance. Our efforts so far have assisted 5,450 people in Aleppo, Syria, through distributions of long-lasting food packs and sleeping bags following the conflict that escalated in late 2016. Our efforts will continue to provide emergency relief in Iraq and Syria where it is most needed.
As fighting eases in areas, these efforts assist local communities begin the process of rebuilding and repairing infrastructure that has been damaged by the fighting. Currently our efforts are focused in Eastern Aleppo, Syria, where we are repairing and winterizing one room per home to ensure that families can return to a safe, secure and warm place with access to water and electricity. These efforts will continue in Syria and will be expanded in Iraq as the need arises.
This program seeks to provide small business grants, training and mentoring to those who have lost their livelihoods due to the conflict. This support allows people to start a small business and provide for their families independently again rather than relying on relief or being forced to leave their homes in search of economic opportunities. Our efforts will fund this program in Iraq for Iraqis, as well as Syrians that have crossed the border into the country.
